Dry skin is characterized by the feelings of tightness due to lack of emollients or oil.  Dry skin has a fine texture with no visible pores. It may be dry skinrough and scaly in places and show lines and wrinkles easily.  The problem of dry skin lies in poor epidermal function and damage to water/lipid barrier.  This is the common complaint for mature skin. Hydration ability decreases as we age mainly due to slowing down of oil production by the sebaceous glands.  As level of natural lipid and oils drop, the skin's ability to retain water is also reduced, leaving dry and often dehydrated skin. In young people, dry skin is usually a result of low sebum production or it may be that the skin has temporarily dried out due to extreme low humidity climate, sunburn, detergent or air conditioning.

Dry skin may be prevented by:

  • Taking lukewarm baths or showers (instead of hot ones).

  • Limiting baths/showers to 5 to 10 minutes.

  • Applying a moisturizer right after drying off from a shower or washing your hands.

  • Using heavier creams or ointments during the winter months and lighter lotions in the summer.
