Exfoliate
![]()
Exfoliate is a process of removing dead skin cells from skin to reveals clearer and brighter skin. It helps to restore suppleness and vigor by stimulating cell renewal. One of the reasons young skin is so clear and radiant is because skin is in its prime and our skin replaces itself in every 14 days. As age sets in, this process slows down and at the age of 40 the renewal cycle is increased to about 30 days. If dead skin cells is not removed from surface by exfoliate, the dead skin cells will clog the pores and make the complexion look dull. There are various ways of exfoliate:
Chemical Exfoliate
Chemical exfoliate is used to "unglue" dead surface cells and do not require vigorous scrubbing and rinsing. Ingredients such as AHA (alpha hydroxy acids), beta hydroxy acids, retinoic acid or enzymes (such as papain found in papaya) is usually used as chemical exfoliate agent. Alpha hydoxy acids (fruit acids) are naturally found in fruits, wine, sugar cane and sour milk. These chemical exfoliate agents help remove dead skin cells from skin surface. They also help to accelerate new cells production. Avoid using these chemical exfoliate ingredients together with abrasive scrubs. It is because if we remove too many cells, this can compromise the skin's natural protective barrier and reveal or expose cells that have not been properly primed to harsh environment.
Mechanical Exfoliate
Mechanical exfoliate is carried out by using synthetic buffing beads, scrubs containing apricot kernels, muslin face cloth or facial brush. Exfoliating too often or too harshly can compromise your skin protection and water proof layer. Be very careful when scrubbing with abrasive products so that you do not damage your skin. Ideally, mechanical exfoliation should be done by a skincare therapist. If you like to use a scrub yourself, choose gentle and fine granules that dissolve in water. Do not overdo it - once a week is enough.
