Making your facial skin smooth, radiant and youthful
Facial Moisturizer
Facial moisturizer helps to keep your skin smooth and youthful. It should be applied after cleansing and toning. In the past, moisturizers were designed to serve as barriers against harsh environment. Neither did they penetrate the skin nor allow it to "breathe",
thus leading to congested, nutrient-starved skin.
Modern moisturizers are designed to help skin function properly. It functions to prevent the loss of moisture and dehydration of the skin, and to speed up the process of cell renewal. A vast choice of products are available and it is hard to decide which moisturizer is right for you.
How To Choose Moisturizer
As as general guidelines, we should all be wearing a moisturizer that offers antioxidant benefits. Antioxidant is needed to fight free radicals and prevent premature ageing. The majority of modern moisturizer formulae also contain ingredients to firm, smooth, and boost skin radiance. You need to ask yourself what concern you most about your skin - is it pigmentation, breakouts, fine lines, dryness, lack of radiance or wrinkles. Once you have the answer, you can choose accordingly. As a general rule, drier skin needs a rich, hydrating moisturizer while combination and oily skin require a lightweight lotion. If your moisturizer does not contain a sunscreen, layer one over it.
Different Ingredients Used In Moisturizers
Vegetables oils - The first moisturizer was probably olive oil. A number of plants contribute to moisturizing oil; avocado, olive, palm, rice bran, coconut, corn, jojoba, and wheat germ (just to name a few). Many types of vegetable oils can be absorbed into the skin and moisturizes the epidermis.
Animals oils - Generally this means fish oils or lanolin (derived from sheep's wool). Like plant-based oils, animal oils can be absorbed into skin to moisturize the skin.
Minerals oils - Mineral oils can make very good moisturizer. The molecules of mineral oils are too large to be absorbed by the skin, the oil stay on the skin surface and act as an effective barrier against water loss.
Vitamin E - Usually listed on labels as tocopherol, its chemical name, makes good moisturizing oil.
Humectants - these are the other moisturizing ingredients. It functions by drawing water to the skin from the environment or from dermis. Humectants are usually used in oil free moisturizer for acne prone or oily skin. Some common humectants include glycerin, hyaluronic acid and propylene glycol.
How To Apply Facial Moisturizer
Wash your hands and face as usual.
Put a nickel-sized dollop of moisturizer on your hand.
Spread the moisturizer in your hands.
Wipe your face with your hands, rubbing the moisturizer all over your face. Use firm, upward strokes, particularly around the neck and jaw line.
Keep rubbing your face gently until the moisturizer has been absorbed into your skin.
If you are applying moisturizer to other parts of your body, follow the same steps.
It is important to remember that moisturizers can make your face look oily, especially if you have oily skin. But this does not mean people with oily skin shouldn't use moisturizer at all. Choose the right kind of moisturizer for your skin type to smooth you skin and help you look young.
