Skin Pigmentation
Skin pigmentation is very common and may be a results of years of sun worshipping or skin trauma. Our skin contain pigment-producing cells called melanocytes that determined skin tone. Dark skins have larger melanin granules, which means more resistant to sun damage. Fairer skin have less melanin and thus more likely to develop brown patches from sun exposure. However skin with more melanin tends to have more hyper-pigmentation related scarring.
Skin pigmentation can be avoided by staying out of sun. However most women experienced skin pigmentation during pregnancy due to hormone activity, even if they avoid sun during this period. Chloasma or 'mask of pregnancy' consist of brown patches that appear on the forehead, cheeks and above the lip. A variety of topical treatment is available for that can lighten the spot with skin pigmentation. These include chemical skin peels, miro-dermabrasion, and laser resurfacing.
